3 Journaling Prompts For When You’re Having a Wobble (creatively or otherwise)

Wobbles happen. Sometimes they come out of nowhere, knocking you sideways, and other times they creep up slowly, leaving you teetering on the edge for what feels like forever. Whatever kind of wobble you’re having right now, please know this: it doesn’t define you or your creativity.

The Temptation

When you’re feeling like this, it’s tempting to push through, ignore the feelings, or try and battle them with ‘positive thinking.’ But all of these approaches create resistance and put you into 'fight' mode. Over time this exhausting state will wear you down until you eventually have very little left to hold on to and you find yourself toppling over, free-falling into your fears and worries until they consume you.

Know the feeling? Yep, me too.

But I have good news. There is another way—one that might feel utterly counterintuitive: to sit with your feelings for a bit. Not fight them, just sit with them.

What ‘Sit With’ Really Means

Now, ‘sit with’ is not the same as wallowing, chasing after, or revelling in. No. To sit with your feelings is like being with a friend who needs nothing more than a shoulder to cry on. They don’t need advice or anger, and they certainly don’t need to be shouted at. All they want is for you to listen, acknowledge, and ask questions with genuine curiosity. When you show for them in this way, they feel comforted and heard. Even better - as they talk their problems out with you, they may start to find their own answers.

Letting Go of the Struggle

This is what journaling is. You’re being your own best and most wonderful friend. You give yourself a moment to pause, reconnect, and listen to yourself. It’s not about fixing things but about being curious and compassionate. And as you do, you might just realise that you have more answers than you thought. All you needed was to let go of the upstream battle and allow the current to carry you, trusting that it'll lead somewhere unexpected but exactly where you need to be.

3 Top Tips for Journaling:

If you're new to journaling (or even if you're not), here are my top 3 tips for getting started.

  1. Let go of any need to perfect or filter your words. Just splurge. Write whatever comes up, no matter how messy or random it feels. If your mind goes blank, scribble “I don’t know what to write” over and over until something does come up. Just let it be a stream of consciousness and see where it takes you.

  2. Setting a timer can help you create this dedicated space—five minutes is more than enough to start with. You can set it for longer as you get more confident with it.

  3. Use the prompts below to kick things off, and remember: there’s no right or wrong way to do this. It’s yours.

Your Prompts for When You’re Having a Wobble:

Prompt 1: How am I feeling right now?

Prompt 2: What do I need to let go of to move forward?

Prompts 3: What advice or words of encouragement do I need to hear today?

I know, I know. Journaling won’t always solve things, but what it will do is help you regain a sense of clarity and, with it, power over the situation. At the end of the day, acknowledging how you feel is the first step to moving forwards.
